Kallowyn No. 5 Tea
$27.00
Kallowyn No. 5 is a loose-leaf blend of green tea and a lightly roasted oolong, made for the middle of the afternoon. It is gentler than a black tea, with less bitterness and a rounded, toasty flavor that many people find easy to drink cup after cup.
The blend includes toasted brown rice and roasted barley, which give the brew a warm, nutty aroma similar to fresh bread. Small strips of dried yuzu peel add a bright citrus edge that lifts the roasted notes. The oolong leaves are rolled and open slowly in the water, so later steeps taste different from the first.
Brew 4 grams, about two level teaspoons, in 250 millilitres of water at 85 degrees Celsius. Water that is too hot can make the green tea taste bitter, so let a boiled kettle rest for about two minutes. Steep for two minutes for the first cup.
The blend is suited to several short steeps. Add thirty seconds for the second cup and another minute for the third. The roasted flavors fade over the steeps while the oolong becomes more floral. It can also be cold brewed overnight in the fridge, using 8 grams per litre of water.
The roasted grains make this blend a good match for food. It works well with rice dishes, grilled vegetables and mild soups, and its low bitterness makes it suitable for drinking with a meal. The lot number and packing date are printed on the base of the tin.
Kallowyn No. 5 is packed in small monthly lots into a 100 gram resealable tin with an inner foil bag. A tin makes roughly 25 first steeps and many more with re-steeping. The ingredients are green tea, oolong tea, toasted brown rice, roasted barley and dried yuzu peel.
