Tea care guide
Loose-leaf tea does not spoil quickly, but it loses aroma when it meets light, air, heat, moisture and strong smells. Good storage keeps a tin of Kallowyn tasting the way it did when it was packed.
Storing an open tin
- Keep the tea in the inner foil bag, roll the top down and press out the air before closing the tin.
- Store the tin in a cupboard between 18 and 24 °C, away from the stove, the kettle and the window.
- Keep it away from spices, coffee and cleaning products. Tea absorbs nearby smells within days.
- Use a dry spoon every time. A wet spoon brings moisture into the bag.
Why not the fridge
Each time a cold tin is opened in a warm kitchen, moisture condenses on the leaves. Over a few weeks this makes the tea taste flat and can cause mould. The freezer has the same problem. A dark cupboard is better for both blends.
Blend-specific notes
- Kallowyn No. 4: the apricot pieces can settle to the bottom. Turn the closed tin over gently before measuring a dose.
- Kallowyn No. 5: the toasted rice and barley absorb moisture faster than the leaves. Close the bag straight after use, and use the blend within 9 months of opening for the best roasted aroma.
Teapots and infusers
Rinse your teapot or infuser with hot water after each use and let it air dry with the lid off. Once a week, soak it for 15 minutes in hot water with a teaspoon of baking soda to remove tea stains, then rinse well. Avoid dish soap in unglazed clay teapots, which absorb the scent.
